MEXICO CITY — Last week, two people died in a school shooting in northern Mexico; one of them was the shooter himself, an 11-year-old student. The investigation is now leading to a possible link between his family and organized crime.
The shooting happened in Torreón, at the state of Coahuila. The shooter was carrying two guns, one of them similar to those used by U.S. cops and banned in Mexico.
The state governor had declared that the shooter was most likely influenced by a videogame. But the authorities are now suspecting that criminal activity was the main cause.
The current investigation says the shooter’s father went to prison in the U.S. for drug trafficking, while his mother had died after getting her throat slit.
His grandparents, who served as current tutors of the shooter, are being investigated for money laundering, fraud and owning illegal weapons. They are suspected of transferring large sums of money to the U.S.
