Arizona congresswoman Ann Kirkpatrick's decision to seek treatment for alcoholism is drawing praise and support from many members of congress and other public figures.
Addiction treatment specialists are coming out in support of Kirkpatrick too.
Dr. Michel Sucher says high-profile people seeking help usually inspires others to do the same.
"It’s very courageous on her part or on anyone who goes public with their illness and their need to get help, and certainly it sounds like what she needs, based on what she mentions," Sucher said. "What has to happen has to just be enough to get your attention to the point where you realize 'I really do need help.'"
Sucher emphasized that alcoholism is a treatable disease and encouraged anyone who may have a problem to seek help.
