MEXICO CITY — Relatives of the women and children murdered in November in Sonora, Mexico, are among the leaders of a rally heading to Mexico City. Their goal is to put pressure on the government to stop the violence in the country.
Thousands of protesters departed from the city of Cuernavaca, 54 miles away from Mexico City.
They’re led by anti-violence activist Javier Sicilia and members from the LeBarón family, whose relatives were killed in the organized crime attack in Sonora last year.
Protesters are chanting for "justice and truth" as they march on the highway that connects Cuernavaca with Mexico City. The “Rally for Peace” wants the government to do more to stop violence in the country.
According to official data, 2019 was Mexico’s most murderous year in recent history.
