Would you eat ice cream infused with CBD? How about CBD creamer in your coffee?
A conference for the International Dairy Foods Association is in Phoenix this week, and cannabidiol (CBD) is a hot topic.
CBD is a chemical in hemp and marijuana, but on its own doesn’t lead to a “high.”
IDFA President Michael Dykes said he’s hearing about it everywhere.
“I think people are sensing that’s where consumers are going to go,” he said at a press conference. “Now, how long will it last? I don’t know. But everywhere you go, there’s an absolutely insatiable appetite for more information about CBD.”
The federal government restricts the use of CBD in food products and animal feed.
Dykes said he thinks sellers of CBD dairy products will push the boundaries of the regulations as they wait for the Food and Drug Administration to put out specific regulations.
“There’s a sense that there’s such a tremendous consumer demand for it, there’s such a market for it,” he said. “They’re going to find some way to tap into that market rather than wait for 10, 15 years for the FDA to decide how you’re going to do it.”
