Arizona State University released a statement Tuesday saying that no student or faculty member will be allowed to travel to China until the coronavirus outbreak is over.
On Sunday, an ASU student was diagnosed with a mild case of the respiratory illness after traveling to Wuhan, China.
The student did not live in university housing and is recovering at home.
Prior to the school’s new travel restriction, a separate ASU student circulated a petition requesting that classes be canceled because of coronavirus concerns.
While the petition has received more than 20,000 signatures, ASU has stated that classes will remain in session and campuses will stay open.
The CDC has sent a team to assist the Arizona Department of Health Services in investigating the one case, and while the virus is considered a “very serious public health threat” globally, department director Dr. Kara Christ has indicated that local risk is low at this time.
