This week we’re talking impeachment.
In December, the U.S. House of Representatives voted along party lines to impeach President Donald Trump. He’s not the first president to go through this. And he will likely serve out the remainder of his term anyway.
But why? And has anyone ever been both impeached and removed from office?
At this time, the Senate impeachment trial of Trump seems likely to end sooner rather than later. Democratic senators had been hopeful they had the Republican votes needed to call for witnesses, including Sen. Mitt Romney of Utah, Sen. Lisa Murkowski of Alaska and Sen. Susan Collins of Maine; each had previously indicated the possibility of voting to call witnesses.
However, Democrats who wanted to call witnesses like former National Security Advisor John Bolton, ultimately, do not appear to have gotten the support to do so. And early Friday afternoon, the trial seemed headed toward a verdict without witnesses.
