How Eco-Friendly Hotel Policies Can Hurt Housekeepers

If you’ve stayed in a hotel in recent years, you’ve undoubtedly come across the signs or laminated pieces of paper providing information on how to use or reuse your towels.

You can keep them on the rack or hanging from a door or you can leave them on the floor, indicating you want them washed.

Marriott’s hotels, for example, offer a Make a Green Choice program that offers incentives for opting out of housekeeping.

But that choice can come with consequences for housekeepers. They may get less work because fewer people are using their services. And the cleaning may be much more dramatic if a room hasn’t been properly taken care of for a few days.

Sandy Villatoro, a union shop steward and housekeeper at the Sheraton Phoenix downtown, joined The Show to talk about the concerns.
