Why It's Important For Native Americans In Arizona To Be Counted In Census

Officials are working to ensure that Native Americans are counted in the 2020 census. But there are a lot of challenges in making that happen — time, distance, technology, lack of trust in the government.

Cronkite News reports a decade ago nearly 5% of American Indians living on reservations went uncounted. That’s one in seven Native Americans — the largest of any group.

The Show sat down with Kristine Firethunder, director of Tribal Relations for Gov. Ducey, and Alexander Castillo-Nunez with the Intertribal Council of Arizona to talk more about those efforts — and why it’s important for Native Americans in Arizona to be counted.
