After extending its contract with Phoenix, scooter company Spin is establishing two designated charging areas downtown.
Spin’s new parking corrals are located at East First and Taylor streets and East Fifth and Monroe streets. These were the two most popular places rides are ended. The spaces are designed to encourage riders to park and re-charge scooters properly.
Spin is part of Phoenix’s scooter pilot program, which began last September. It remains the only scooter company in Phoenix ever since Lime and Bird pulled out.
Phoenix Street Transportation Department spokeswoman Heather Murphy explained the need for the scooter corrals.
"There wasn’t a real coordinated effort to figure out where should they park, what should that look like," Murphy said. "So the city designed a program that requires the parking. It has been successful so far, [but] it’s still in pilot stage."
Spin is giving discounts to riders who choose to park at the corrals. The company plans to add eight more charging areas by next month.
