Back in 2016, the people of Flagstaff voted to raise the minimum wage in their city. But then, so did the people of Arizona. In a statewide ballot measure that raised it — just not by quite as much.
City leaders in Flagstaff realized their minimum wage would be $1 higher each year after 2017.
Then, in 2019, state lawmakers threw another wrench in the situation. They passed a law that required cities paying above the state minimum wage to reimburse the state for the cost it incurs for paying state workers and contractors there.
And now, Flagstaff is getting the bill.
Flagstaff City Councilmember Jim McCarthy joined The Show to talk about how that city plans to pay for it. He voted for Proposition 414 back in 2016 to increase the minimum wage in Flagstaff.
