Major League Baseball Cancels Spring Training

A day after the NBA abruptly suspended its season, other major sports leagues followed suit, and the NCAA even canceled its annual March Madness basketball tournament.

On Thursday morning, some spring training games were canceled due to rain. Hours later, Major League Baseball made it permanent: spring training is over.

And the start of the regular season will be postponed by at least two weeks.

Diamondbacks owner Ken Kendrick said players are encouraged to remain in the Valley in the interim.

We're the local team, many of them have homes here, would go to local places to work out in any event. So we would hope that they would come here where we’ve got really good medical people on board and a nice operation, so right now our hope and plan is until we start playing baseball games, our players will be training here," Kendrick said.

The Phoenix Suns and Arizona Coyotes are also on standby as all leagues debate when and how to resume play.
