The U.S. Senate passed bipartiasan legislation introduced by Sen. Kyrsten Sinema designed to ensure benefits remain intact for the thousands of veterans using GI Bill benefits to attend Arizona colleges and universities, which are shifting to online instruction in an effort to curb the spread of the coronavirus.
In order to receive full benefits under the GI Bill, veterans must attend in-person classes. Online classes only offer half benefits.
The bill would authorize VA Secretary Robert Wilkie to continue providing benefits regardless of how instruction is conducted.
Sinema said that during this crisis, Arizona’s student veterans should "trust the educational benefits they’ve earned will always be protected."
The bill now moves to the U.S. House for approval.
