After Gov. Doug Ducey and public education chief Kathy Hoffman closed all Arizona schools last week amid the coronavirus pandemic, some child care centers have remained open to help serve first responders and health care workers.
Jessica Rigler is with the Arizona Department of Health Services. She says DHS has made additional recommendations to keep children safe from the virus that has already infected 21 Arizonans.
"Such as trying to distance the children as much as possible, especially during meal times and snack times; cycling through your recess or recreational activities so you don’t have multiple classes on the playground at the same time," she said. "And also not mixing classes within the classroom so you’re separating each of the different classes within the childcare facility."
Earlier this month, Ducey issued a Declaration of Emergency and on Tuesday, Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego followed suit, forcing the closure of dine-in bars and restaurants starting at 8 p.m. There is no end date set.
