After Sonora’s first case of COVID-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus, was confirmed Monday, the state’s famous beaches are to be closed for at least the next month.
Sonoran Gov. Claudia Pavlovich and Health Secretary Enrique Clausen asked mayors from around the state to enforce the closures, along with other aggressive measures, like shuttering bars and casinos.
The closures will go through Holy Week in early April, when beaches around the country are typically overrun by local and foreign visitors alike, according to a Monday afternoon tweet from Hermosillo Mayor Célida López.

“We’re going to have a different Holy Week,” she said during an earlier interviewwith Sonoran outlet Proyecto Puente.
A state health department official said that during the meeting, Lopez and other Sonoran mayors agreed to prevent any event with more than 10 people from taking place in their jurisdictions. He said the measures are serious but necessary to protect Sonorans.
