MEXICO CITY — Mexico City has about 9 million inhabitants and, so far, only 21 registered cases of people with COVID-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus. The mayor says it’s still time to stay calm, but many are already preparing to deal with the pandemic’s outbreak.
Mexico City’s mayor, Claudia Sheinbaum, explained that people infected are being treated and their relatives under observation.
"Everything has its time," the mayor said. She’s asking the city's population to avoid any hasty decisions to protect the economy.
Her administration suspended massive events and school classes, promoting hygiene and social distancing. But many citizens are starting their own quarantines, packing supermarkets and working from home.
Mexico City's largest event for the Easter holiday, the recreation of the Passion of Christ at the municipality of Iztapalapa, will be only televised and held without public for the first time in its 177-year history.
