Pima County has joined a growing number of local governments that are shuttering businesses to try and stem the coronavirus pandemic.
The Board of Supervisors passed the proclamation 3-2 in an emergency meeting Thursday. Like other resolutions across the country, it bans eating in restaurants, closes down venues like bars, gyms, movie theaters and bowling alleys.
The measure started Wednesday night and will last through the end of the month. The supervisors and the county’s health department worry the effects of the coronavirus pandemic will unfold over months.
"This could be 12 to 18 more weeks and beyond," Republican Steve Christy said before voting to oppose. He said that information came from the county health department.
As of Thursday, seven people had tested positive for the coronavirus in Pima County.
