The U.S. attorney for Arizona says he’s tasked a top assistant with leading fraud investigations connected to the coronavirus pandemic.
In a news release, U.S. Attorney Michael Bailey said the chief of a white-collar crimes unit has been tapped to serve as the COVID-19 Fraud Coordinator. Bailey vowed to catch and prosecute anyone illegally leveraging the public health crisis to make a profit.
Bailey said his office is already getting accusations that people have used the coronavirus outbreak as a chance to prey on others.
There have been reports of scams like people selling fake coronavirus tests door-to-door. And phishing emails sent by someone posing as the World Health Organization and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
