As Cases Rise, Sonoran Public Hospitals Have 356 Ventilators

Sonora, the Mexican state to Arizona’s south, confirmed its fifth case of COVID-19 on Tuesday.

That case was a middle-aged female stylist in Ciudad Obregon, the state’s second-largest city, according to Health Secretary Enrique Clausen. It was detected by a health station at the city’s airport, and the patient is isolated at her home. She had recently traveled to Spain and Dubai.

In response to a reporter’s question during a Tuesday press briefing, Clausen said public hospitals in the state have 356 ventilators, which are used to treat serious cases.

“But we’re also working on acquiring more ventilators,” he said.

A large shipment of testing gear from the federal government is expected shortly, according to another health official.
