MEXICO CITY — After the Mexican government and the World Health Organization acknowledged local coronavirus transmission in Mexico, the country is moving to phase two of its strategy against the COVID-19 pandemic.
Hugo López-Gatell is Mexico’s undersecretary of public health. He said now is Mexico’s chance to slow the outbreak, which is why this phase comes ahead of the exponential growth of cases.
The plan includes closing schools until April 19, canceling events of more than 100 people, suspending certain work activities and insisting on hygiene and personal distancing.
There will be no mandatory curfews.
The Mexican president, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, said the country is financially prepared for the pandemic, and promised credits with low-rates for some affected small businesses.
The president said it's time to be more protective of high-risk groups, particularly the elder.
