MEXICO CITY — Mexico’s president has been criticized for his loose strategies against the coronavirus outbreak and for not following social distancing. But the Mexican leader is announcing part of his economic plans to face the pandemic — and some changes in his social conduct.
President Andrés Manuel López Obrador signed a decree requesting businesses provide a one-month paid leave to all workers over 65 or with high-risk conditions, such as diabetes or hypertension.
The government will distribute $1.8 billion in financial aid for the elderly. The National Guard will help transport the money and will also coordinate with state authorities to stop any attempts to loot stores.
López Obrador said 1 million loans with low-rates will be available for affected small businesses. He said his government will not forgive taxes or request any foreign loans.
And for his upcoming public events, the president promised less attendees — and no hugs or kisses.
