The Senate approved a $2 trillion coronavirus relief package Wednesday that includes $8 billion for tribes. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Native Americans are some of the most vulnerable because of economic and geographic conditions.
Under the legislation, $1.032 billion would help the Indian Health Service provide treatment and prevent the spread of COVID-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus, on tribal lands.
The package also ensures tribes and their businesses receive loans. More than $450 million would go to tribal law enforcement. Funds are also available for food, tribal schools and colleges, and housing programs.
In addition, the Navajo Housing Authority says it has suspended eviction notices and waived payments. And the Navajo Tribal Utility Authority is delaying disconnections.
Volunteer efforts are also underway delivering food, medicine, coal, and wood.
