Phoenix Symphony Cancels Season, Lays Off Musicians

The Phoenix Symphony is canceling the rest of its season as the coronavirus continues to cause closures and job losses across the Valley.

The symphony employs more than 60 full-time musicians, who will be laid off amid the season’s cancellation. A third of staff will also be laid off, and remaining administrators will work with reduced salaries.

statement released by the 73-year-old organization said laid-off employees will continue to receive health insurance and other benefits. CEO Suzanne Wilson said in the statement that she hopes to be able to reinstate jobs in time for the start of the 2020-2021 season in September.

The statement called the impact of COVID-19 on the performing arts community “devastating.”
