Crossings at Arizona border ports are down sharply since restrictions went into place last month in response to the coronavirus pandemic.
At Arizona’s six ports, average daily crossings are down 56% for personal vehicles and 63% for pedestrians, according to data provided to KJZZ by U.S. Customs and Border Protection. Now about 10,000 cars and 7,000 pedestrians are crossing each day.
Restrictions on northbound travel were negotiated by Mexico and the United States, and allow for essential travel, which includes cross-border trade and the return of U.S. citizens and legal permanent residents.
As a result, commercial crossings have been largely unimpacted, according to CBP. Arizona border cities are heavily dependent on people crossing from Mexico to shop.
