A young woman is the first confirmed COVID-19 death in Sonora, Arizona’s neighbor to the south.
The 29-year-old woman was from Magdalena de Kino, a 90 minute drive south from Nogales.
Sonoran Health Secretary Enrique Clausen said that she was a recently diagnosed diabetic and died on March 30. Her positive test for the coronavirus was confirmed by federal authorities Saturday, bringing the state’s total caseload to 29.
“This death should serve us, not as a warning, but rather we should see the death of this great woman as an example of the reality that this could happen to any of us,” he said.
He urged Sonorans to follow stay-at-home orders issued by the state.
