Several Mexican border governors are asking their compatriots living in the United States not to return during the upcoming Holy Week.
The governors of Tamaulipas, Nuevo Leon and Coahuila agreed during a Friday meeting to several measures to limit the coronavirus spread, including a new campaign, " Paisanos, no Vengan" — or "Countrymen, Don’t Come!"
Many Mexicans living in the United States return to Mexico during Holy Week, which begins Sunday.
“Year after year, caravans have from all across the United States, where there are now serious problems from this pandemic that has caused hundreds, thousands of deaths,” Tamaulipas Gov. Francisco Garcia Cabeza de Vaca said in a videopublished by the outlet Milenio. “It would be very difficult for us to control if these caravans and all our paisanos come to [Mexico].”
The Mexican Foreign Affairs Ministry made a similar call to Mexicans living in the U.S. and elsewhere earlier last week.
