The federal government launched a new web tool this week where people who have not filed a tax return in the past two years can register for their coronavirus relief check.
The new tool, which can be found on the IRS’s website, is designed for individuals who don’t have a return filing obligation, including those who make too little income and veteran beneficiaries.
The tool is a secure way to share information such as their name, Social Security number, address and dependents, the federal agencies said. The IRS will use that info to confirm their eligibility and calculate how much they will receive.
“The IRS and Free File Alliance have been working around the clock to deliver this new tool to help people," said IRS Commissioner Chuck Rettig.
The agency said you are not eligible for a check if someone else has claimed you on their tax return.
The IRS is launching a second tool called "Get My Payment" on April 17 where people can check the status of their payment and provide bank account information so they can receive a direct deposit instead of a mailed check.
Payments will be automatically distributed to most eligible taxpayers starting next week.
