Post-secondary educational institutions are getting about $12.6 billion in funding from the federal coronavirus relief package known as the CARES Act. The U.S. Department of Education is distributing half of those funds to schools immediately.
The amount of funding each school receives is — in part — based on their low-income student population and total student population.
The Arizona institution getting the highest amount of CARES Act funding — $63,533,137 — is Arizona State University.
The University of Arizona is receiving the second highest amount, $30,953,447, followed by Northern Arizona University, $23,577,854.
The Department of Education requires that at least half of these funds go toward emergency financial aid relief grants to help students with expenses such as course materials, food, housing, health care and child care. Education Secretary Betsy DeVos said the CARES Act provides institutions with significant discretion on how to award this emergency assistance to students.
“This means that each institution may develop its own system and process for determining how to allocate these funds, which may include distributing the funds to all students or only to students who demonstrate significant need,” she said in a letter to the schools.
Grand Canyon University said it’s putting the entire $22 million it's receiving toward its students.
“This was an easy decision to make,” said GCU Brian President Mueller in a Thursday statement. “It is incumbent on us to take care of our students and families who are trying to navigate the challenges caused by this coronavirus pandemic.”
UA and NAU said as of Friday, they had not decided how they would use those funds.
ASU said it is hoping to announce how it will use the funding soon.
