New Report Looks At Pregnancy In Immigration Detention

Congress’s watchdog arm says more than a 100 complaints were filed against immigration authorities in recent years about the treatment of pregnant women in detention. But in most cases, investigators did not have enough information to decide if proper care had been given.

The new report from the Government Accountability Office looks at data from the Border Patrol and Immigration and Customs Enforcement. More than 100 complaints were filed against the agencies over their treatment of pregnant women between January 2015 and April 2019.

Investigators found proof to back up only three of the claims. And there wasn’t enough evidence to verify dozens more. But most times there wasn’t enough information for investigators to even reach a conclusion.

The most common complaints against ICE were for bad medical care, that it wasn’t timely, or there was none at all.

The Border Patrol was most commonly accused of physical or mental mistreatment of pregnant women.
