Spring training may have been called off and Major League Baseball’s opening day delayed because of the coronavirus, but Arizona’s baseball fields may still see some action.
During a press conference on April 14, Gov. Doug Ducey acknowledged the possibility that Arizona could host the entirety of this year’s MLB season.
“I have had discussions with the commissioner of Major League Baseball," Ducey said. "And while I want to hold the content of those discussions in confidence, I just want everyone to know that Arizona, at the right time, is very open-minded to hosting whatever Major League Baseball would like from the state.”
Of course, Ducey said the data would have to indicate it’s safe for the public to do so. But just as he is eager to get Arizona open for business again, he’s eager to keep the state’s options open for a return to normal when the time is right.
“Two words that would allow the country and the state of Arizona to know that things were heading back to normal would be ‘play ball,’” Ducey said.
