The Phoenix Rescue Mission is receiving a large donation from the Missouri-based nonprofit Convoy of Hope.
Widespread unemployment and economic problems caused by the coronavirus pandemic has not only led to an increased demand for food donations, but it's also reduced the available supply of donated food, according to Phoenix Rescue Mission spokesman Ryan Brown.
"We have seen a decrease in the amount of food we’re receiving from groups like St. Mary’s, and at the same time we’ve actually had quite an increase in the people that we’re serving," Brown said. "At our food banks were serving close to double the normal of households, and at our community markets it’s 50% more."
Convoy of Hope says it is trying to donate 10 million meals to food banks and nonprofits across the country in response to COVID-19, and their President Hal Donaldson says more than 5 million meals have already been distributed as of Friday.
"We have a common mission," Brown said. "They love being able to support ministries that are doing powerful work in their community. We're both Christian organizations, so we have the same hope that what we do will not only provide sustenance and food to people, but provide more hope and a brighter future."
