For people experiencing homelessness or who otherwise can’t afford internet service, public libraries are often their only source for internet access — which is increasingly becoming an essential service.
However, most libraries are still closed to the public during the pandemic.
To make sure people have access to critical information and services only available online, Yavapai County Free Library District will be providing free Wi-Fi in its library parking lots, according to director Corey Christians.
“We’ve extended the range to be outside the library into the parking lot, and we’ve also increased the number of hours that it’s available — so it used to just be available when the library was open, but now it’s available 24/7,” Christians said.
Christians says this is an essential service for rural Yavapai County towns like Crown King, where the library is often the only place with internet service.
