Millions of Americans devote themselves to some form of service — whether it’s public service, military service or volunteering in their local communities. But when generational shifts occur, there is a general concern about whether younger people will follow in those footsteps. Are they eager to serve? Has the nature of politics made them cynical about whether they actually make a difference?
On April 28, a virtual event called Meeting the Moment: The Next Generation of Service addressed some of those issues.
Before the event, The Show spoke with two of the scheduled speakers — Jonathan Koppell, the dean of the Watts College of Public Service and Community Solutions at ASU; and Dr. Joseph Heck, chair of the National Commission on Military, National and Public Service — about what issues arise when trying to get more young people into public service.
