Mexico Vacates Migrant Shelters And Stations As A Result Of Pandemic

MEXICO CITY — As a result of the coronavirus pandemic, the Mexican government decided to empty its migration centers and stations, while deporting thousands to Central America.

Mexico’s National Institute of Migration reported that the evacuation of its facilities started March 21, following recommendations from national and international health authorities.

The institute says only 106 migrants remain in its 65 stations and shelters. More than 3,600 hundred people were sent to their countries of origin: Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras.

Authorities say any foreigner willing to stay in the migration shelters may do so if they request it.

The institute says migration shelters and stations did not report anyone sick with COVID-19.
