'Ireland Stands With You': Navajo Nation GoFundMe Gets Many International Donations

The  Navajo Nation has raised $2 million and a  GoFundMe campaign has raised almost an additional $2 million for the tribe, who has been hit hard by the coronavirus. Some recent donations came all the way from Ireland.

In 1847, the Choctaw Nation sent $170 to starving Irish families to help them during the Great Famine. The tribe had just suffered their own loss during the Trail of Tears when the federal government forced the Choctaw and other tribes to leave their land.

Donations to the Navajo came with messages like “to repay the favor to all Native Americans” and “Ireland stands with you.”

Navajo Attorney General Doreen McPaul says they have received many international donations.

“Many of you know my dad’s actually a dual citizen of the United States and Ireland, and I really appreciate our relatives in Ireland reaching out to the Navajo Nation to support our efforts here,” McPaul told a Facebook Live Town Hall.

In addition to monetary donations, the tribe has asked for medical supplies as well as things like bottled water and diapers for the community.
