MEXICO CITY — The Mexican government reports that 250 of its nationals in the U.S. have the coronavirus. Mexico’s diplomatic wing is putting together a strategy to attend to its citizens in the U.S. as the pandemic continues and while many states end lockdowns.
The Mexican government says it’s monitoring migrants held in detention centers to guarantee their medical attention and protection from the virus.
Authorities say they’re collaborating with U.S. officials to guarantee security measures for Mexican workers in essential industries, particularly agriculture.
Mexico’s Secretary of Foreign Affairs Marcelo Ebrard said local U.S. authorities have been consistently protecting those who work or live there, regardless of their nationality. He highlighted the case of New York, were the majority of Mexicans with COVID-19 are.
Mexico will gradually reopen some consulates, still favoring remote assistance. The Phoenix office will reopen by May 15. The Laredo, Texas; Brownsville, Texas; El Paso, Texas; and Denver consulates will reopen immediately, followed by Del Río on May 6 and Douglas on May 8.
