Arizona Humane Society Pet Adoptions Are Up, But Donations Are Down

While Arizona slowly allowed businesses to reopen to the public, the Arizona Humane Society continued following social distancing protocols to protect pets under its care.

The shelter has laid off zero of its staff, partly because of its virtual match-making adoptionsby appointment and extended hours at the emergency animal hospital.

"We have switched to an A and B team schedule, so the Second Chance Animal Trauma Hospital vets and veterinarians, they are working 24 hours, seven days a week," said spokesperson Kelsey Dickerson.

She also confirmed that while the number of people adopting and fostering animals has increased, donations have dropped and the shelter cannot hold fundraising events to make up the difference.
