More Than 1,000 Nursing Home Residents Infected With COVID-19 In Maricopa County

More long-term care facilities are reporting cases of COVID-19 among residents and staff.

Facilities in Maricopa County have hit a new milestone. As of Monday, there were slightly more than 1,000 confirmed cases of COVID-19 among nursing home residents and 175 residents have died from the virus.

Staff at these facilities are also getting sick. Nearly 460 employees have contracted COVID-19 and two have died.

A spokesman for the Arizona Department of Health Services confirmed the state is starting a pilot testing program for residents and staff at long-term care facilities this week.

The White House is also recommending that all nursing home residents and staff be tested for the coronavirus in the next two weeks.

More than 27,000 residents and staff have died from the virus across the country.
