Tempe Requiring Certain Businesses Turn In Social Distancing Plans After Reports Of Crowded Bar

After a picture of a crowded Tempe bar circulated social media, Mayor Mark Mitchell issued a proclamation Tuesday requiring certain businesses to turn in social distancing plans.

Under the new proclamation, Tempe businesses that file security plans to the city, like bars and dine-in restaurants, will be required to document how they are ensuring social distancing within and outside of their establishments.

In a press release, the city said any violation of the governor’s executive order or the mayor’s proclamation is a class one misdemeanor.

The proclamation came after pictures posted on social media showed customers crowding inside and outside of the C.A.S.A. Tempe bar.

The city did not name the business in the statement, but said on Monday night, Tempe police responded twice to complaints about a downtown establishment.

The city said a citation could follow if the concerns are repeated.
