The governing board for Tucson's largest school district has unanimously approved a new, highly-debated sex education curriculum.

The material was finalized in April and emphasizes abstinence.

Board members for the Tucson Unified School District postponed the vote in September, so some changes could be made.

The high school curriculum includes topics like gender expression, gender identity and sexual orientation.

Many were opposed to teaching gender identity on a spectrum, acknowledging transgender students. Others didn’t want sex ed taught in school at all.

The curriculum was revised over seven months.

For more on the history and the details of this curriculum, The Show spoke with Danyelle Khmara, education reporter for the Arizona Daily Star.
