Roman Catholic Diocese Of Phoenix To Slowly Resume In-Person Mass

The Roman Catholic Diocese of Phoenix will resume in-person Mass services as Gov. Doug Ducey’s stay-at-home order expires.

Bishop Thomas Olmstead says services will resume slowly and methodically, with accommodations for the individual needs of each parish.

“It will occur over the course of time, and it will vary from parish to parish, based on a variety of circumstances that are unique to each community," Olmstead said. "Our goal is to balance the spiritual needs of the faithful with our concern for their physical well being and the common good of the wider community.”

Faithful Catholics will still be encouraged to watch live-streamed services if they’re more comfortable celebrating from home.

"Catholics in the Diocese of Phoenix who are vulnerable or feel safer staying home are encouraged to do so," Olmstead said. "I urge those of you who can not join us in person to continue to watch a livestream of the Mass."

Olmstead said church capacity will be reduced to allow at least six feet between parishioners, and facilities will be cleaned frequently. Still, Olmstead says parishioners must exercise caution.

"Attendance will be limited due to social distancing, church capacity, and other factors," he said. "It is important for individuals and families to take personal responsibility to protect themselves by adhering to social distancing guidelines and by following CDC guidelines for hand washing."

It will be a while before Mass feels "normal" again, Olmstead said.

"It is important to know that progress will be gradual, and may at times be imperfect," he said. "Please be patient and kind with our priests and one another."
