As travel restrictions begin to loosen and planes return to the runways, Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport will require all travelers, flight crew and staff to wear protective face coverings starting June 1.
While they’ll need to be worn tight over the nose and mouth at all times, the term “face coverings” can be used loosely.
Scarves, bandannas, towels and even turtlenecks will be OK to use.
Those with the hearing impaired who need to read lips, or people with certain health requirements won’t have to wear a covering.
Julie Rodriguez of the Phoenix Aviation Department says the extra safety measures could lead to longer waits.
“We are recommending that passengers give themselves plenty of time," Rodriguez said. "If you can, bring your boarding pass on your phone — if you can download that before you come to the airport so that you're not printing and handling paper, that's a good recommendation.”
Certain stores at the airport will have masks available for sale, with hand sanitizer stations and social distancing markers placed throughout the building.
