COVID-19 patients in Sonora, Arizona’s neighbor to the south, are putting more pressure on hospitals.
With cases and hospitalizations rising quickly, Sonoran hospitals are now 60% full, according to Gerardo Alvarez, with the state health department. Hospital capacity is one of the indicators in a new national system determining when parts of the economy and society can open.
“If the percentage of hospital occupancy exceeds 60%, the mobility restrictions will remain in place,” he said.
Sonora has nearly 1,300 COVID-19 cases and 95 deaths. In neighboring Arizona, which has many times more confirmed cases and deaths, 83% of intensive care unit beds are occupied.
