There is not a lot of data to support a conclusion, but there are signs that the coronavirus may increase the risk of stroke in people under the age of 50.
Dr. Michael Waters at Phoenix’s Barrow Neurological Institute says it has him concerned because strokes are occurring in patients with low-risk factors and those who are otherwise healthy.
“The hypotheses that are out there include the prone inflammatory state of these patients which include the tendency to form blood clots,” Waters said.
The patients having strokes, he says, were asymptomatic in the traditional markers for COVID-19, but stresses there is still a limited amount of information available on cases.
