Hermosillo Mayor, Other Sonoran Officials Test Positive For COVID-19

Over the weekend, Sonoran officials announced that the number of confirmed coronavirus cases in the state had surpassed 1,500 with more than 100 deaths. On top of that, Hermosillo Mayor Célida López confirmed Saturday night that she had tested positive for COVID-19.

"Honestly, I haven't had any symptoms," she said in a virtual news briefing, adding that she had only been tested after contact tracing showed she had been in meetings with other public servants who later tested positive for the virus.

"I was tired and had a headache at the end of the week," she said. "But with everything going on, a headache seemed normal.”

Now, she plans continue working from home while she remains quarantined for the next two weeks.

Two state cabinet secretaries and the Hermosillo police commissioner also tested positive for the virus in recent days and are quarantined at home.

After sharing the news that she has the coronavirus, López reminded on Hermosillo residents to continue following Sonora's strict stay-at-home orders. Many Hermosillo residents are getting restless, and a growing number of people have been cited for throwing parties or gathering at Sonora's beaches, which have been closed for two months. But with the number of coronavirus cases and deaths continuing to climb in the state, Lopez said, it's not time to loosen restrictions yet.

"The only thing we can do right now is avoid leaving the house," she said. "We have to be responsible."

As of Tuesday morning, there were 1,701 confirmed cases of coronavirus in Sonora and 129 deaths.
