The legal clinic within the activist group No More Deaths says three of the nine people it has helped get out of immigration detention tested positive for COVID-19.
Keep Tucson Together says it’s helped nine people win bond or humanitarian parole.
“Everyone who was released quarantined immediately either at their homes or at the Casa Alitas shelter here in Tucson,” Jenna Johnson, a volunteer lawyer for KTT.
All nine people were tested within three days of leaving detention, she said. The results showed three men had COVID-19.
“They were all largely asymptomatic. None of them had severe complications as a result of their exposure,” she said.
Johnson said two of the sick men had been held at the La Palma Correctional Center, where federal officials have confirmed dozens of COVID-19 cases. The third positive man was held in Texas.
Harvard Medical School says it’s unknown how long it takes for a person infected with COVID-19 to test positive.
