Many of Sonora’s numerous manufacturing plants have gotten the green light to slowly reopen soon.
Among the plants preparing to reopen is the massive Ford plant in Hermosillo, one of the city’s most important employers, according to a company statement.
“Working closely with government and union leaders, Ford de México is gradually resuming operations and production under the strictest protocols to keep our employees healthy and safe,” the statement reads.
Ford and several hundred other businesses are represented by the local branch of Canacintra, whose head Gabriel Zepeda said around 80% of its members have been cleared to begin slowly reopening starting June 1.
But uncertainty remains about how many workers could be allowed back, as well as whether every company given approval will actually reopen.
“We’re going to find out how many aren’t coming back,” Zepeda said.
Zepeda said that some businesses depend on supply chains that include nonessential facilities, which may require special approval to be able to operate.
