Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport's Terminal 4 in August 2019.

In April 2019, close to 4 million passengers passed through Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport. In April of this year, there were fewer than 300,000 passengers.

Airport spokesperson Heather Shelbrack says that’s almost a 93% drop in passenger traffic.

"These numbers continue to reflect the dramatic decrease in passenger traffic that began in mid-March due to the COVID-19 pandemic," Shelbrack said.

Overall, 2020 has already seen about 35% fewer passengers than 2019.

But the news isn’t all bad. Cargo traffic increased from April of last year, and passenger numbers are starting to slowly recover.

"Our cargo for the month of April was up 5.2% compared to the previous April," Shelbrack said. "While our April numbers are down, we are seeing increases so far in traffic throughout May."

Official passenger traffic numbers for May should be released next month.
