About 500 homes in Cave Creek have been evacuated as a three-alarm brush fire continues to grow and has burned multiple homes.
As of 11:30 a.m. Sunday, the fire burned more than 1,250 acres and is 5% contained. Aerial firefighting teams have been called in, and have been dumping water from golf-course lakes on the flames.
The Maricopa County Department of Emergency Management issued an evacuation notice, which didn’t identify specific regions for evacuation — leading some to believe the entire county was being evacuated. They later clarified the alert was for areas near the fire.
An evacuation center has been set up at Cactus Shadows High School.
