In May, state officials touted the decision by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) to open its new U.S.-based manufacturing facility in Arizona. The governor’s office says TSMC will spend roughly $12 billion on the project over the course of eight years, and that it’ll result in more than 1,600 new high-tech jobs here.
However, the opening of this plant will also play a larger role in U.S.-China trade relations as it’ll shift the balance of high-tech manufacturing between the two countries. It also raises questions about the national security concerns both countries share regarding the transfer of intellectual property.
The Show spoke about this with Will Knight, a senior writer at WIRED who has been writing about this issue.
