The Arizona chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations has filed a federal lawsuit against the Maricopa County Community College District and a professor.
The case stems from a lesson on terrorism at Scottsdale Community College. It accuses a professor and the district of First Amendment violations on religion.
Court documents say a Muslim student took a political science class with a unit on Islamic terrorism at Scottsdale Community College.
The local Council on American-Islamic Relations says the professor injected false personal bias against Islam into the lesson, and then gave quiz questions that forced the student to condemn their own religion, or hurt their grade.
“This type of misinformation can result in bias against students and hatred and hate attacks, said Executive Director Imraan Siddiqi.
An outside review ordered by Scottsdale Community College said the professor’s boss concluded the class material and the quiz were right, because they aimed to test knowledge of what certain terrorist groups believe.
A district spokesperson said it had not yet been served with the lawsuit. The district plans to review the case and comment when it’s able.
